Chapter 16: The Dock
"Hands where I can see them, Tino," Trent said.
Tino took his hands out of his pockets slowly and held them up.
"I'm boring," he told me. "Remember."
Trent stopped at the end of the slip, ten feet from the boat.
He looked at me in Elio's shirt.
He looked at the open bench seat, the life jackets, the rope.
The empty bread bag on the deck.
Then he lowered the gun a few inches and smiled.
It was the smile from the pier.
"Vi. Babe. What are you doing on my dad's boat?"
"Looking for your wedding present."
"Come on. Come here. Get off that thing before you fall in." He held out his free hand. "You look exhausted. You look like you haven't slept in weeks. That's what he's doing to you."
The boat rocked under my feet.
My surgical bag was hanging from my shoulder.
My phone was in my shirt pocket, recording.
"I slept fine," I said.
His smile thinned.
"Here's what's going to happen," he said, still gentle. "You're going to give me the bag. We're going to go get breakfast at the diner on Detroit, like we used to. And this whole month is going to be something we laugh about at our tenth anniversary."
"I don't want to laugh about this, Trent. I want to know why you went up to get my wrap."
His face changed.
It was like watching a dog's lip curl.
"Give me the bag."
"No."
"I'm a police officer. That's evidence in an investigation."
"Then call it in."
He didn't call it in.
The gun came back up.
"Here's the other way it goes," he said, and his voice was quiet now, nearly bored. "You're a woman who ran off with a mobster. You're on a boat that isn't yours. You've got a stolen weapon in your bag. You come at me. I'm in fear for my life."
