Chapter 22: Three Capos

I knelt on the wet concrete beside the dog.

His whole body was hot as an oven, and the tremors came in waves from his back legs up his spine.

I ripped open the bag of treats.

Through the cracks in the cheap biscuits I could see little green flecks.

"Snail bait," I said. "Dina!"

Dina was already there in her pajama pants, pulling on gloves.

"How long ago did he eat it?"

The capo was shaking almost as hard as his dog.

"An hour? My wife gave him one after dinner. She thought you sent them."

"Then we've got a chance. Tino, the big light. Dina, diazepam, and get a line in his front leg."

We got the shepherd onto the surgery table, the big one, under my father's light.

He seized again as we lifted him, and the capo made a sound I'll never forget.

"Hold his head," I told him. "Talk to him."

The capo held his dog's head and talked to him in Italian, low and steady.

The diazepam went in.

The shaking slowed, but it didn't stop.

"Again," I said.

Dina gave it again.
