Chapter 14: Free of Charge
"You knew," I said.
My voice sounded like it belonged to someone standing farther away.
"Of course I knew." Rhett shrugged, and coffee slopped over the lid onto his glove. "I walked out onto that balcony because I was looking for Ellis and a girl was crying out there."
"You heard me say thank you."
"You said it to my face. You had mascara on your chin and you looked at me like I'd hung the moon."
He smiled at the memory.
"I looked behind me. Ellis was in the hall with his stupid glasses of water, and he wasn't coming out. So I said, 'Anytime.'"
"Why?"
"Why not?"
He answered at once.
"Nobody had ever looked at me like that, Lucy. Not because of my name, or my mother's money. Because I'd done something kind."
I said nothing.
"I hadn't," he said. "But you didn't know that, and it felt wonderful. I wore it for five years."
"You let me ask you out six times."
"I loved it."
The words went in.
"It's very flattering, being chased by a girl who thinks you're a better man than you are. I kept waiting for you to find out."
"And I didn't."
"You never asked. Not once." He tilted his head. "That's your fault, you know. Not mine."
"I thought you forgot."
"I thought you'd notice."
"Notice what?"
"That I only hold a door when somebody's watching."
"I noticed," I said. "The first week."
His eyebrows rose.
"I told myself you were tired. I told myself that for two years, Rhett, and I was the one who needed the excuse."
