Chapter 11: Bossman
By nine that morning there were three of us at Mama's kitchen table and one at the stove pretending not to listen.
My laptop sat open in the middle of the oilcloth, next to the sugar bowl.
Jesse's account was easy. His email was the same one he'd had since middle school, a Panthers thing with his jersey number.
His password wasn't.
"A boat," Sawyer said. "He said a boat."
"We grew up in a boatyard," I said. "That's like saying a word."
Corey sat with his cane between his knees and a legal pad, writing down everything we tried.
He'd been sober a day and a half. His hands shook so bad his letters ran downhill.
"How'd it even get up there?" Sawyer asked. "The truck was in a ditch in the woods."
"The effects sat in the company office two nights before the captain took them," Corey said. "Phones, wallets, all of it, in a bin on the gunny's desk. There's wifi in that office."
"So it backed up while Bryce had it."
"Or before he got to it." Corey shrugged. "Nobody thinks about that stuff. You'd have to know."
I typed Daddy's boat. The old Grady-White he took out every Sunday.
Wrong.
I typed it with a capital. Wrong.
I typed the name of Granddad Pickard's skiff, the one I rebuilt in a weekend.
"That's my boat," Sawyer said. "Why would Jesse use my boat?"
"He liked your granddad better than you."
"Everybody does."
Wrong.
A yellow banner slid down the screen.
"Too many attempts. Try again in 15 minutes."
I shut the lid and put my forehead on it.
