Chapter 10: The Whole Floor

Nobody said anything for about four seconds.

Then someone near the printers whispered, "Is that the CEO?"

And the whole floor exhaled, and the noise began.

Phones, chairs, a nervous laugh, a woman near the window saying "no way" in a voice she thought was quiet.

Colby came out of his glass office with his hands in his pockets and his face arranged in sorrow.

"I'm so sorry," he said, to the room, not to me. "I didn't want this to come out like that. A colleague sent me the picture and I thought the team should hear it from us before the press does."

"Hear what?" Gwen said, standing up.

"That some of us have concerns about how promotions are going to work under new ownership."

"That's a photo of two people holding hands in an elevator, Colby."

"It's a photo of the new CEO and his, what should I call her? His analyst."

A couple of people laughed.

It was the cheap, hungry kind of laugh, the one a crowd gives you when you hand it blood.

Gwen opened her mouth and I put a hand on her arm.

"Gwen. Sit down. I've got it."

"You do not got it. You're shaking."

"I know."

I slid my chair back.

The wheels whined on the carpet.

Then, because it was the only way to be seen from the back, I stepped up onto it.

My white sneakers sat on the black leather seat.

I stood there.

It was a perfect idiot's silence.

"Hi," I said.

A hundred and forty people looked up at me.

My knees did a small, humiliating wobble.
