Chapter 17: The Wolf And The Lion
Bracken's bedchamber at Gallowmere was the warmest room in the keep, and Linnea had taken it without a second thought.
It had a carved bed hung with stag furs and a basin of water that was still hot.
The fire was the size of her old ferry cabin.
She sat on the edge of the bed in her stained shift and let the water run pink over her hands.
Downstairs the nine children slept in a heap of blankets in the great hall, with seven men on guard around them.
Every cord was gone, and every child was breathing.
The door opened without a knock.
Kaelen stood in it, and behind his shoulder stood Marek, and they were both looking at her.
"Out," said Linnea tiredly. "I can't hold court in my shift."
"We are not here for court," said Kaelen.
His voice was rough.
"My nephew woke up and asked if I'd brought him a sword," he said. "I have not stopped shaking since."
"My sister said my name," said Marek, and then stopped.
He didn't say anything else.
His big hands hung at his sides, open and empty.
