Chapter 18: Council Of Clans
The Lion Elder did not come up the stairs.
He waited in the courtyard in the grey dawn.
Marek came down to him, dressed, and stood in front of him with his jaw set.
They were the same height, and they had the same eyes.
"Your sister is alive," said the Elder. "Good."
"Good?" said Marek.
"Bracken swore to return her at midwinter, and a Lion keeps a bargain."
"You knew," said Marek, very low. "You were at that table. You let him take her."
"I let the clan keep its seat at the Chancellor's right hand," said the Elder.
"One girl, for the clan. I have more children than I have seats."
Linnea had come to the top of the keep steps in Torvald's coat, and she heard every word.
Marek said nothing at all.
His father looked past him, up the steps, at the ferry girl with the bandaged hand.
"You are the one who bled for my daughter," he said. "I thank you. It changes nothing."
