Chapter 19: Marek's Duel
The duel ring was a circle of sand raked in the palace courtyard, lit by fifty torches.
Nine clan elders sat along one wall, and the whole court crowded the others.
Linnea stood at the front with Kaelen's hand clamped around her wrist, and she was not sure which of them was holding the other up.
Marek stripped to his breeches and stood barefoot on the cold sand.
The Elder did the same, and he was an old man with a lion's chest and a lion's scars.
"First blood," said the eldest elder. "Or yield."
"Blood and claw," said the Lion Elder. "No yielding."
Nobody argued with him.
Then they shifted, one after the other.
Marek's shoulders rolled forward and doubled, and his hair streamed back into a heavy gold mane.
The Elder was larger, white-maned and scarred across the muzzle, and he moved.
They hit each other in the middle of the ring.
