Chapter 21: Judgement In Ember Hall
At noon the next day, Linnea sat in the plain stone chair that nobody had used in forty years.
The Hall was so full the doors could not close.
The farmers of Corrow stood along one wall, in clean clothes borrowed from the kitchens.
The nine clan elders sat in their ring, and the Council lords sat under the galleries, looking carefully at their knees.
Nine children sat on a long bench at the front, each with a blanket and a bowl of Torvald's honey cakes.
They were the first thing anybody saw when they came through the doors.
Bracken was brought in last, in iron on both wrists, with his ruined right hand bound to his chest.
He had been stripped of his chain of office.
Without it he looked smaller than anyone had thought a man could.
"Osric Bracken," said Espen, reading from a scroll in his clear stag's voice. "You are charged before the Stone and the realm."
"With the drugging of the Crown."
"With the taking of nine children, and the binding of their kin by cord, and the strangling of those children by that cord."
