Chapter 13: Where It Plays

I carried the drive across the street to Roz's back room and put it on her folding table.

She watched the footage once, standing up, with her glasses pushed into her braid.

When Cassidy lay down on the step, Roz said a word I had not heard since the cell block.

"Play it again," she said. "I want to see her check the camera."

I played it again.

Cassidy looked left, then right, then straight into the lens.

"Three years," Roz said. "And she had time to fix her hair first."

I sat down hard on a stack of laundry bags.

"Where do we take it, Roz? The detective who arrested me? The prosecutor who put me away?"

"You tell me."

I called the prosecutor's office on speaker at eight the next morning.

A receptionist answered, and I gave my name.

"Mrs. Pennington," she said, and her voice went careful. "Mr. Pennington's counsel has asked this office not to take calls from you."

"I have evidence in my case."

"Then you can send it to your attorney."

"I don't have an attorney. I have sixty dollars."

"I'm sorry, ma'am."

The line went dead.

Roz held up her phone, with Brice's feed open on it.

"Read that," she said.

*PENNINGTON FAMILY NIGHT. Friday after next, doors at seven, Pennington Auto showroom. Free for every family in Carrow Falls. Honoring second chances, with our guest of honor, the County Prosecutor.*

I read it twice.

"He invited the man who sent me to prison," I said. "To give a speech about second chances."

"With a photographer, I bet."

"With every camera in the county."

Roz grinned, and it was not a nice grin.

"So that's where it plays."

"If I hand this over in some office, his lawyer calls it fake and it disappears. If it plays in front of the prosecutor, three hundred people and the news, nobody can say it was never seen."
