Shane didn't look away from Marissa.

"An awful lot," he said. "How many times is that?"

Marissa blinked.

"I'm sure I don't know."

"I do. Today was the first time I've been inside that house since last April."

He said it to the room, not to her.

"Last April I helped Dalton carry a crib up the stairs. Today I carried in formula, because the baby had none."

He turned to the man in the gray suit.

"Every shift I work is logged at St. Brendan's. Ask them. I did sixty hours in the ER last week."

The man picked his fork back up.

"And I've never seen a card ending in 4471," Shane said. "But I'd love to."

Marissa's lip trembled.

"I didn't mean anything by it."

"Yes, you did."

Dalton stepped between them.

"Enough," he said. "Both of you."

"Both of us?" I said.

He looked at me.

For one second I thought he'd see it.

His wife in an old dress, with a milk stain on her shoulder, asking for the truth in front of his whole company.

"Lainey, I will get the bank to pull everything on Monday," he said. "Every withdrawal, every camera. If you didn't take it, it'll show."

"If," I said.

"I didn't mean it like that."

Ingrid picked up a glass of champagne from a passing tray.

"She's making a fool of you, and you're apologizing to her."

"Mom."

"No. I've kept my mouth shut for three years."

She turned to me.

"You came from nothing, you married my son, and now you've got his best friend running errands for you. Is that what the money's for? To keep the doctor happy?"
