Chapter 21: Elliot's POV
Elliot's POV:
Helen Ambrose came to my office in the last week of February, alone, without calling.
I had laid off nine drivers by then.
I had gone through each one's file myself and found each a place at a competitor, and I had cut my own pay by half.
Nobody at Wray Freight had said a word to me about it.
They had only started bringing me coffee.
She stood in the doorway in her navy coat and looked at the gray concrete room.
"It's smaller than I remember," she said.
"It is."
"I've come to withdraw the lawyers."
I put down my pen.
"Meaning?"
"I don't want your freight to fail. I'm sending a letter to the board to reinstate the contract at the old rate, with an additional two years, if you like. Your father would want it."
"My father would want me to keep my word."
"You gave your word to me."
"I gave it to nobody. I sent a notice." I leaned back. "The contract is closed, Helen. It's what I decided."
She sat down across from me without being asked.
She looked older than she had in December, and thinner.
"Then I'll ask for something else," she said. "A small thing."
"No."
"You haven't heard it."
"I know what it is."
"Do you?"
"You want me to propose to her."
Helen said nothing.
"On the fourteenth," I said. "At the party. In the room you booked. In front of two hundred people."
"She'd say yes."
"I know she might."
"Then what is the difficulty?"
I thought about how to say it to a woman who had spent six years buying other people's choices.
"It wouldn't be hers," I said.
