Chapter 4: Pound Cake
"Looking for the napkins," I said. "You've used up the good ones."
Reed came down the stairs in a towel with his hair dripping, and he looked at the laptop, and then at me.
He closed it with one finger, gently.
"That's just invoices," he said. "Alyssa does my books. You know that."
"I know that."
"Seven days is the net terms. Everybody pays in seven days."
"That makes sense," I said.
It made no sense at all.
He kissed my forehead, and his hair dripped on my face, and I smiled up at him.
I had been smiling at that man for four years, so my face knew how.
I went to bed on my side of the mattress and lay with my eyes open.
At two in the morning Reed's phone lit up on his nightstand.
I watched the ceiling until it went dark.
In the morning I called the vet clinic and said I had a family thing, which was the second lie of the week and easier than the first.
Aunt Bernice lived ten minutes away in the house where my father grew up.
She was sixty-four, a retired school cafeteria manager, five feet tall and about as wide, and she answered the door in a flour apron with a church hat already on her head.
She wore the hat for any conversation she expected to win.
"Who died?" she said.
"Nobody."
"Then why are you gray?"
I held out the printout.
She read it standing in the doorway with her glasses on their chain, and I watched her mouth go thin.
"Come in," she said. "And bring the man in the car."
I turned around.
The dark sedan was parked across the street.
