Chapter 20: Live

Dylan's POV

By eight on Monday morning, half my showroom had seen it.

The service writer held her phone up as I walked past the coffee station.

"Mr. Thorsby, you should read this before you go to the floor."

It was a long post on a Dayton neighborhood page, with eleven thousand members and a photograph of Bailey in a black dress.

She had written it on Sunday night.

She said she had been fired for telling the truth.

She said Hannah Thorsby had known about the affair for twenty months.

She said Hannah had stayed only to stage a public execution in front of two hundred people, with a dead child as the stage.

She said a woman who could wait that long was not grieving, she was planning.

She called Hannah heartless.

She said she had been the only person in that building who ever listened to me.

I read it standing up, and my hands went cold, and I read the comments below it.

Some were hers.

Some were strangers I'd never met who said she had a point.

Then a nurse had written, in capital letters, I WORKED THE FLOOR THAT NIGHT.

A woman I did not know had written, I lost mine at 22 weeks and nobody should be told what she told that woman on the phone.

Beth was in the thread, naturally.

She had written eleven replies, and the last one said, Come say it to my face, Bailey. Bring your phone.

I put my phone in my pocket.

My father stood at the end of the showroom with his arms folded, watching me.

"I can take it down," he said. "I've got a lawyer."

"No," I said. "Let her say it where I can answer."

He did not argue.

At noon the lot was full of the January clearance crowd, thirty or forty people in coats walking the rows.
