Chapter 24: Back Row

The chairs were set out on Beth Lowe's front lawn, on the same grass where she had once thrown my shirts.

I noticed that as I came up the walk, and I noticed Beth noticing me notice it.

She stood at the end of the aisle in a green dress, with a bouquet in one fist.

She gave me a look that was almost a smile.

"Back row," she said. "Left side. Your father's already there."

He was.

My father sat in the last chair in his navy suit with his hat on his knee.

He moved his feet to let me by.

"They asked me too," he said, low. "I told Hannah I'd understand if she wanted me stuck in a tree."

"What did she say?"

"She said I was her family and she wasn't done with me."

He cleared his throat and looked at the sky.

It was a clear October afternoon.

The maple at the corner of the yard had gone red all at once.

There were about forty chairs.

Nurses from St. Elizabeth's filled the first three rows, in their good clothes.

The woman in the purple coat sat in the second row, in a purple hat.

A string of paper lanterns hung between the porch posts.

The porch rail had been re-set and oiled, and I knew whose hands had done it.

Jonas stood at the front under a plain wooden arch, with his hands clasped.

He had built the arch himself, and it was cut from white oak.
