Chapter 19: Two Men Who Knew

Lenore walked off down the hall with her garment bag over her shoulder.

She didn't look back. I didn't call after her.

I stood in the wig room door and counted to ten, the way I do before a hard cue.

Then I walked to dressing room one.

The gold star was still on the door.

I knocked and opened it in the same motion.

Jude was at his mirror in his undershirt, eating takeout noodles out of the carton.

He looked at me in the glass. The last time I'd opened this door, he'd been standing between my stepsister's knees.

"What," he said.

"Wednesday night," I said. "Act one. You saw Bettina come down the gallery ladder."

He kept chewing.

"No, I didn't."

"In her camel coat. In the dark. You told Lenore in bed and you laughed."

Something went across his face, fast, and then it was gone.

He put the carton down and turned his chair around to face me.

"Okay," he said. "So what if I did?"

"So what?"

"So my manager went for a walk. She likes to see the building. She's got a pass. You gave it to her, remember? 'We don't break contracts in this building.'"
