Chapter 15: What He Owes

I went out to meet him in the lot with H.A.'s skates still in my hand.

Henrik stopped ten feet away.

His tie was gone and his shirt was open at the throat.

He looked as though he had driven the whole way with his eyes shut.

He glanced at Rolf in the doorway, then at the skates, and then at me.

"I'm not here to ask you for anything," he said.

"Then why are you here?"

"To tell you what I owe."

"You owe me nothing."

"I owe you plenty, and you're going to let me say it."

I folded my arms around the skates.

"Say it."

"I knew you were lying that morning, and I called it love when I walked away."

"It was pride."

"I wanted you to come after me, so I could stop being the one who got left."

"You were burying your father, and I sat in a hotel room in Milwaukee, keeping score."

"I stood at the back of the church and let you walk out with nobody."

"I called it looking after you, and it was cowardice."

"Rolf told you that, I guess."

"Rolf told me," I said.

"I should have walked up the aisle."
