Chapter 22: Honeymoon Cabin
The heart on the cabin door had been repainted red while we were at the wedding.
Henrik stopped on the porch and looked at it with great respect.
"Rule one," he said.
"We never speak of the heart on the door."
"Rule one is repealed," I said, and dragged him inside by the necktie.
The housekeeper had been busy.
There were fresh rose petals on the quilt and a new candle on the nightstand.
Someone had also filled the clawfoot tub in the corner and left a note on the rim in curly handwriting.
Congratulations on the biggest bed in the county. Elsa.
"She wrote that on purpose," Henrik said.
"She wrote it with a pen she stole from the front desk."
"I'm going to have to tell my little sister that I have a sex life."
"She's known since Monday," I said.
"She said the headboard was a hate crime."
He laughed.
It was a real laugh, helpless and loud, and I watched it roll through him from the chest down.
I decided I wanted to hear it for the rest of my life, and then I decided to think about that tomorrow.
I turned my back to him and lifted my hair off my neck.
"Zipper," I said.
His fingers found the tab of the green dress.
