Chapter 15: Craig Comes for Him
Erik's POV
I drove Jo home at noon and watched her walk up her own steps with her chin up.
Eli opened the door before she touched it.
He hit her at the knees, and she went down on the mat and held him, and I looked at the street so nobody would see my face.
Craig's car was not in the drive.
Dorothea stood behind them in the hall with her hands folded, and met my eyes once, and looked away.
"Go to work," Jo told me, over Eli's head. "I have my own front door."
"Call me."
"I will."
I had a shift at the air base at four.
The crew room smelled like burnt coffee and wet boots.
I was checking the drug bag when the pilot leaned in the doorway and said, "Your brother's here."
"I don't have a brother."
"He says he does. Nice coat."
Craig stood in the middle of the hangar floor in a camel overcoat and leather gloves.
He had come in through the visitors' door and nobody had stopped him, because he carried himself with easy entitlement.
Two of my crew sat on the supply crates with their coffee, watching.
"Erik," Craig said, warmly. "I'm sorry to come to your work."
"What do you want?"
"I wanted to see where you spend your days."
"You've seen it."
"I wanted a witness or two." He took out his phone and held it up toward the crew. "My brother has been sleeping with my wife. She is three weeks out from losing a baby, and she's under a doctor's care. I'd like somebody to tell me I'm wrong."
