Chapter 8: Paolo's Flash Drive

Bianca's POV

Paolo picked a church café in Queens, where nobody from our world would ever eat.

He was already at a back table when I came in, with a cold cup of coffee and bruised circles under his eyes.

Tommaso stayed at the door.

"You came," Paolo said.

"You asked."

He looked at my hand, which was still pressed to my side where the dressing was.

"Does it hurt?"

"Yes. Why did you want to meet me?"

He turned the cup in a slow circle.

"Because I held your arm in that lobby."

"You pushed me into a wall."

"I know." He swallowed. "I've been trying to tell myself I didn't, for two days."

I did not sit.

"I'm not here to forgive you, Paolo."

"I'm not asking you to."

He pulled a small black flash drive from his jacket and set it on the table between us.

"Camille keeps recordings of everything. Mostly of you. But she's careless with her phone, and I copied what I could in the last year."

"Why?"

"Because of the transfer."

I felt my face go still.

"You knew about it?"

"No." He shook his head hard. "I swear to you I didn't. I found out Sunday, when she bragged to her sister on the phone. She said it was done and she was only waiting on the paperwork to settle."

"And you thought of me."

"I thought of what I'd be, when she was done with me."
