Chapter 22: The Board Room

Six hands went up around the table, and the seventh, Russell's, stayed flat on the wood.

"The motion carries," the chairman said. "Mr. Kincaid is removed as president of Kincaid Freight, effective now."

Russell did not move.

"You can't do this," he said at last. "I built this company."

"Your father built it," the cousin said, looking at his own hands. "You borrowed it."

"Mr. Kincaid." The chairman's voice was tired and kind. "Please surrender your keycard and your phone. The company's phone."

Russell turned to his lawyer.

The lawyer was already closing his briefcase.

"There's nothing to argue," the lawyer said quietly. "I'd advise you to go."

Two security guards had come in without a sound and stood by the door.

One of them was the guard from the front desk, a heavy man with gray in his mustache whom Russell had once refused to give a day off for his daughter's wedding.

"Sir," the guard said. "After you."

Russell stood, and he tried to straighten his jacket and could not make the sleeves lie flat.

He looked at me down the length of the table.

"You'll be sorry," he said. "You'll be alone in this building with nobody who loves you, and you'll see."

I rose from the chair I had been given.

"I don't think so," I said. "Look behind you."

He turned.

Through the glass wall, the corridor was packed with people, all the way to the elevators.
