Chapter 20: Sunday at Linden Street
Connor came to Linden Street at five minutes to one, alone.
No lawyer had come with him.
He wore the grey suit from the Chamber dinner, creased now, and he had not shaved.
His mother let him in and pointed to the dining room without a word.
The table was set for four, with the good plates.
Pippa sat on one side with her hands in her lap and the pouch at her neck.
I sat beside her, in my old grey dress, and Abraham waited on the porch, because I had asked him to.
Connor's mother took the head of the table.
She laid a single sheet of paper in front of his place, and beside it a pen.
"Read it," she said.
He read it.
His jaw worked.
"You can't be serious."
"The house on Maple Court goes to Joanna and Pippa," his mother said. "You keep the dealership, the lots and your name. You move into the flat above the Dunmore office by the end of the week."
"That's my house. I built that kitchen."
"You built it with money from your father's loan, which I co-signed." She turned a page. "Joanna asks for no other money. She asks for her grandmother's Bernina, which she has, and the fifteen years back, which she cannot have."
I said nothing.
I had given her my terms on the phone the night before, and they fit on half a page.
"Pippa lives with her mother," his mother went on. "You see her on Sundays, at this table, with me present, until Pippa says otherwise."
"Until she says otherwise?"
"She's eleven, Connor. She will say it when she's ready."
He laughed, a short ugly breath.
