Chapter 10: Six Years

Wynn carried Milo out the side door, and Dalton went after them.

I went after Dalton.

Nobody stopped me.

The parking lot was cold and lit orange.

Wynn was buckling the boy into a car seat with shaking hands, and Dalton stood with his back to me, not touching either of them.

"Go home," he told her. "I'll come later."

"You will not," Wynn said. She didn't look at him. "Not tonight."

She shut the door and drove away with her headlights off until she reached the road.

Dalton turned.

"Monica."

"How old is Milo?"

He opened his mouth.

"How old?"

"He turned six in August."

"August." The math hit me cold. "Nine months before August is November. Seven years ago."

"Monica."

"That's the month after our wedding."

"It was one weekend."

The lot tilted a little, and I put a hand on the nearest car.

"That was the winter my mother got sick," I said. "I drove up every Friday to stay with her. You told me to go. You said you'd manage."

"Monica, I didn't know. I swear. Not until after."

"After what?"

"After he was born." He pushed a hand through his hair. "Wynn sent me a photo. A baby in a hospital blanket. No letter, just the photo and one line: He has your eyes."

His voice cracked.
