Chapter 16: The Invitation

The invitation came by courier to the dental office on a Thursday, in a cream envelope with a gold seal.

I opened it in the break room with a stick of string cheese in my other hand.

Kessling Flooring requested the pleasure of Mrs. Rupert Kessling's company at its sixtieth anniversary gala.

It would be held at the Pfister Hotel on the fourteenth of December, at seven o'clock, in the grand ballroom.

Under the printed lines, in blue ink, Marianne had added: "As family, always. Come and be proud of what we built. M."

I read it three times.

Then I took a picture of it and sent it to Rowan.

He called me back in under a minute.

"She's baiting you," he said.

"Obviously."

"It's three hundred guests and a stage. She wants you on it, smiling, so everyone sees the wife came home."

"I know."

"You're not going."

"I'm going," I said.

He didn't answer for a moment, and I could hear the studio kettle in the background.

"Tell me why," he said. "I won't argue. I want the reason."

"Because she picked the room." I pushed the string cheese away. "She's spent a month making sure the only people who hear about the saline are people she can pay. Three hundred guests can't be paid. If she wants me there, I'll walk in, and so will everything I've got."

"The vials."

"The vials, your photographs, the recordings, Brooke."

"Brooke's not a prop."

"No. She's a witness, and she said yes."

Rowan breathed out.

"Then I'm coming," he said. "As your plus-one, or your photographer, or the man holding the coats. You pick."
