Chapter 6: Two Heartbeats

Fran's friend from the hospital lab had a sister who was a divorce lawyer, and on Tuesday morning the lawyer saw me before her first client.

She was about seventy, with a white braid and a desk covered in files, and she read the petition in under two minutes.

"The abandonment ground is nonsense," she said. "You left after you found out about the other woman, and you have a recording of him asking you to stay. The infertility ground is nonsense too. Wisconsin doesn't care."

"They filed it anyway."

"They filed it to scare you." She tapped the page. "They have also frozen the joint card and the joint account. How much have you got?"

"Two hundred and twelve dollars."

"And a good aunt, I hear."

She looked at me over her glasses.

"Is there anything you haven't told me?"

I had told no one. I had told a photographer, by accident, over a pregnancy printout on a studio floor.

I took the paper out of my purse and put it on her desk.

She read it without any change of expression, and then she looked up.

"How many people know?"

"You. A man who photographs weddings."

"Keep it that way for now." She said it quietly. "If they believe you can't have children, they'll keep saying so under oath, and I want every word in a file. When the time comes, we'll show the court the real number."
