Chapter 4: The Social Worker
The social worker pulled the chair out and sat down with her clipboard on her knee.
Her badge said she had worked there for nineteen years.
"Mrs. Tolliver, I'm required to follow up when a family member raises a concern," she said. "Your mother-in-law says you left a moving vehicle and walked off a highway ramp."
"I got out of a parked car," I said. "At a rest stop. Under an awning."
"She says you were hysterical."
"I was seven months pregnant, and my husband told me to wait two hours for him to drive eighty miles."
Garrett shifted at the end of my bed.
"Pip, that's not how it was."
"Then tell her how it was."
He looked at the floor.
Marjorie had come back in and stood at the door with her hand at her pearls.
"I'm only worried about her," she said. "She hasn't been herself. She has these moods."
"What moods?" I asked.
"You said you'd go to the doctor about it."
I had never said any such thing.
The nurse from the operating room was standing in the corner with a blood pressure cuff.
She cleared her throat.
"I was with her from midnight to now," she said. "She signed her own consent with a steady hand and answered every question. If anyone here is unwell, it isn't her."
The social worker wrote that down.
The door opened again, and Jonas came in with his hat in his hand.
It was a quarter to seven, and he had slept in the car, from the look of his collar.
"Trooper Kessler, Highway Patrol," he said to the room. "I'm here to give a statement about the plaza."
Marjorie's smile slipped for one second and came back.
"Oh, how kind of you, officer. This is all a misunderstanding."
