Chapter 11: Bathwater
The bartender's tub was long and white and stood on four iron feet.
He had filled it so full that the water trembled at the rim.
"Get in," he said. "Before it goes cold."
"I'm getting in," I said.
"You're standing there with your arms crossed."
"I'm admiring the feet."
"They're good feet," said the bartender. "Cast iron. The landlord didn't even know they were there."
He was twenty-four and Irish-American, from Greenfield, with freckles on his shoulders and reddish-brown hair that stuck up in back.
He tended bar at a pub on Murray Avenue, where he had made me an Old Fashioned two hours earlier and told me the story of his grandfather's pigs.
He had a bathroom the size of a closet.
A single bulb in a cage burned over the sink, and he'd left it on when we came in.
I started to reach for the switch.
"Leave it," he said. "I'd walk straight into the tub in the dark."
"You live here."
"And I've walked straight into it."
I laughed, and left it on.
I stepped out of my dress, and out of everything, and climbed over the cold rim and down into the water.
It was almost too hot.
I let myself sink to my chin and shut my eyes, and every muscle I owned went slack at once.
"Oh my God," I said.
"Right?" he said.
"Why is this the best thing that's happened to me all week?"
"Because you've been standing up all week."
He got in behind me.
The water rose and sloshed, and he settled with his knees bent on either side of me and pulled me back against his chest.
