Chapter 12: The Tally

Kennywood opened for the season on a Saturday so hot that the funnel cake sweated through its paper.

Jackie had claimed a picnic table near the carousel.

She had a cooler, a bag of buns and my potato salad in a red plastic bowl.

My mother had gone to stand in line for lemonade with two of my aunts, and was telling them about her hip.

My nephew and niece were on the carousel, on a white horse and a purple one.

They waved at us every time the music came around.

"Give me your phone," Jackie said.

"What for?"

"Mine's dead. I want a picture of them on the horses."

"Your phone is not dead," I said.

"It's at four percent, which is dead. Come on."

I handed it across.

She knew my passcode, because she has known my passcodes since we were nine.

I watched the carousel and ate a bun and thought about nothing at all.

She took six pictures, and then she stopped.

She stood there with her thumb sliding on my screen.

A look came over her face that I'd seen once before, in our mother's kitchen, when she found a letter from the school.
