Chapter 17: The Stairs
I had called Luca on Thursday, a day early, and told him I could not say yes or no yet.
"I'll be here," he had said, and hung up before I could add anything.
It left me an unanswered question and a Saturday with a brewer.
He was twenty-four and white, from Sharpsburg, with a ginger beard and big soft hands.
He smelled sweet and yeasty, from working inside a vat.
He was the assistant brewer at a taproom on the river, and he had talked about mash temperatures through two beers.
His rowhouse was the last on a narrow hill street, and it was ninety degrees at ten at night.
We never got past the staircase.
He opened the front door, and the hall was dark and hot.
A steep flight of stairs rose to the left, with a fan turning uselessly at the top.
"Sorry," he said. "No air. I mean, there's air up there, but it's, there's a lot of stairs."
I put my hand flat on his chest and pushed him back against the newel post.
"Dee?"
"This is fine."
"On the stairs?" he said.
"Sit," I said. "On the third one."
He sat.
He sat with his shoulders against the wall and the carved post at his hip, and his knees wide.
