Chapter 18: The Mirror
The dance studio on the second floor in Oakland had a wall of mirrors forty feet long and every light turned on.
I had asked for that at the door.
"You want them all on?" the dancer had said.
"All of them."
"It's very bright."
"I know what bright is," I said.
He was twenty-four and Greek-American, born in Oakland a mile from where we stood.
He had olive skin and black hair combed straight back.
He had the straight spine and quiet feet of a man who taught foxtrot for a living.
He had taught me a rumba for twenty minutes before I kissed him.
The floor was honey-colored maple, polished by a thousand shoes.
A wooden barre ran along the wall under the glass at the height of my hip.
A slow song played from the speaker he had set on the floor, a woman's voice and a piano.
He stood in front of me in his socks.
"Take your shirt off," I said. "Slowly."
"I only do things slowly," he said.
He undid the buttons from the top, never taking his eyes off mine.
He had the body of a dancer, long and lean, with a flat stomach and hard thighs.
A line of dark hair disappeared into his waistband.
When the shirt fell, I saw him in the mirror from behind, the long muscles of his back working.
"Now me," I said.
He undid my dress at the back and drew the zipper down, one inch at a time.
He kissed each bone of my spine as he went.
The dress dropped.
I stood in my underwear in a room full of light, forty feet of glass doubling every inch of me, belly, thighs, soft hips.
I did not turn to the wall.
