Chapter 17: Parents' Night
Parents' night was Thursday at six, in a classroom built for people three feet tall.
I sat on a blue plastic chair with my knees up near my chin.
Percy had abandoned me at the door to show the class rabbit his compass.
I had not told Nelson about it.
I had asked for a week, and I meant to take one, and I had spent two days not answering his texts.
At 6:04, the door opened.
He came in wearing the charcoal suit, and the room stopped talking.
Every parent in it had read the blog.
He looked at the rows of tiny chairs, chose the one beside mine, and lowered himself onto it with great care.
His knees came up past his waist.
"The school emailed me," he said, very quietly. "I'm on the list."
"I know. I put you there."
"You said a week."
"It's been two days."
"I know," he said. "I can leave."
He did not move to leave.
The teacher stood at the front with a clipboard and a sticker chart.
