Chapter 8: Alana's Phone

I had eighteen days left, and I needed a telephone.

Dad kept his in his pocket, and Grandma Maureen kept hers in her purse.

Alana left hers on the charger in the laundry room every afternoon while she gave Eli his bath.

On Monday, I stood in the laundry room with the door closed and her phone in both hands.

It had a picture of Eli as a baby on the lock screen, but no password.

I had never had a phone in my first life until I was thirteen, so I typed slowly.

Children's heart clinic, Columbus.

There was a number at the top of the results.

I pressed it and held the phone against my ear with my heart pounding.

"Ohio Children's Cardiology, how can I help you?"

"Hi." I tried to make my voice sound older. "I need an appointment for an echocardiogram."

"Is this for you, sweetheart?"

"Yes."

"Is your mom or dad there?"

"They're busy. I have a murmur, and I have a hole in my heart between the bottom two parts, and I'm blue when I run. I need someone to look at it before Friday the fifth of October."

There was a short silence.

"Honey, I'm going to need a parent to call us with a referral from your pediatrician," she said, very gently. "We can't schedule a child on her own. Can you put an adult on the phone?"

"My pediatrician's file is gone. Please. It's an emergency."

"If it's an emergency, you should hang up and have your mom call 911..."

The laundry room door opened.

Alana stood in the doorway with a wet towel over her shoulder and her glasses fogged from the steam.
