Chapter 10: The First Night

Roxana's POV

"How long?" I said again.

Jonas set the boots down on the floor, very carefully, side by side.

"Three years," he said. "Since the day I buried him."

"You let me think you came to the Naming about the ambush."

"I did come about the ambush."

"You've been looking at my pencil lines every night for three years."

"Yes."

"And you gave me a bed and a pad of grid paper and told me it was a deal."

"It was a deal."

"It was a trap," I said. "You wanted to watch me use it."

He did not deny that.

I walked into the room and put my hand flat on the wall.

The Hollis Creek sheet was under my palm, with my thumb smudge in the corner.

I had made it at nineteen, on my bedroom floor.

No one in my own house had ever kept one.

"You have no right," I said.

My voice shook.

"None," he said.

"I could hate you."

"You should."

"I do." I turned around. "I hate that you looked at them. I hate that you knew them better than my father does. I hate that this is the first place anyone ever pinned them up."

He stood there with his arms at his sides.

"Say something," I said.

"I'm sorry."

"That isn't something."

"Then I don't have anything."

"Thirty days," I said, and I heard my own voice crack on it. "You told me thirty days. No touching. No talk about the scent. A rule you could keep."

"Roxana."

"You said it was the only one you could keep."

"I lied."

I crossed the room in three steps and took his shirt in both fists.

"Your thirty days," I said, and kissed him.

It was not gentle.

I had wanted it since the cab of his truck, and since the war room, and I put every night of it into his mouth.
