Chapter 9: Jonas's Wall

Jonas's POV

By midnight all six Ironwood wolves were out of the river, and I had not yet told her that the third rope had been mine.

I had stood in the freezing shallows to my waist and hauled a man twice my size onto the bank.

He had gripped my arm and said, "Why?"

I had held out Roxana's map, wet at the edges.

"Because she asked," I had said.

He read her name in the corner and began to cry.

Cassia Hargraves arrived twenty minutes later in her little blue car with a thermos and a first aid kit.

She stood on the road above and watched Black Creek wolves carry her pack out of the water.

She did not look surprised, and she did not look pleased.

She looked over the wolves on the bank, then turned and left before anyone could thank her.

Roxana had stayed at the lodge.

She was drawing again when I got back, bent over the war room table with her hair loose and a pencil behind her ear.

I did not go in.

I stood in the hall with the river still in my boots and watched her for a minute, and then I went up the back stairs to the room I do not show anyone.

It is at the end of the third floor, under the roof.

It has a bed I never use and a window facing north, and one wall of it is covered in paper.
