Chapter 24: The Frame
On Sunday evening Gwen stood on a kitchen chair with a hammer in her fist and a nail between her teeth.
"Higher," said Elliot.
"I'm five-nine. I know what high is."
"The eye line is five-six."
"Whose eye line?"
"Hers."
Gwen took the nail out of her mouth and pointed it at him.
"You're the only man alive who measures a wall for a woman's eye line before you hang a picture."
"It's a gift."
"It's a menace."
I leaned against the counter with a mug of coffee and let them argue.
Our kitchen was small, and it was full.
Elliot's tonic water stood in the fridge door next to Gwen's oat milk.
A stack of Larkin tent swatches sat on the table beside the first proofs of the new Maddox wordmark.
The wordmark was not grey anymore.
It was the loudest red on the block.
On the shelf over the stove sat a small brass prize.
A card tucked under it said *Felicity Fairbrother*, in a committee's careful hand.
Beside it, in the dish where we kept the keys, was a second set that was his.
I had not said anything about that, and neither had he.
Gwen drove the nail with two blows.
"There," she said. "Hand me the glass."
Elliot lifted a flat package from the table and unwrapped the paper.
It was a plain black frame with a sheet of hotel notepad pressed behind the glass.
The paper was creased white in quarters, and the handwriting was mine.
*Thank you for the night. Honest review: B+. Dropped points for the tonic. Do not call. I won't.*
He held it with both hands.
He had carried that note in a card case for weeks.
Now he passed it to my best friend.
Gwen hung it on the nail.
She stepped back on the chair, tilted her head, and straightened it a quarter inch.
