Chapter 10: Meghan

I was trimming roses at the back counter on Wednesday morning when the bell over the door rang.

I didn't look up.

I could still feel Mitchell's mouth in places that had nothing to do with roses.

I had woken at dawn on his bed behind the sliding screen, his arm across my ribs, and lain there memorizing the weight of it before he stirred.

He had driven me to the shop and kissed me once at the curb, quick and rough.

Now he stood at the front window with his arms folded, reading the street.

"Lana," said Meghan.

I set down the shears.

She stood inside the door with her hair coming out of its band and her eyes swollen shut.

She looked like she hadn't slept since the night of the engagement.

"I'll go if you want me to," she said.

"Say it first."

Her mouth shook.

Then she started to talk, and it came out all at once.

"Lawrence paid off my student loans. Ninety-one thousand dollars, in one transfer, the week after you got engaged. He said he wanted to take care of the people you love."

I listened.

"I thought it was kind. Then he asked me to keep him informed. Little things, how you were sleeping, if you were stressed." She wiped her face with her wrist. "He promised me events director by spring."
