Chapter 4: The Spare Room
Mitchell's loft sat above a boatyard in Red Hook, up an iron staircase that rang under my shoes.
Inside, one long room ran the length of the building.
A wooden hull stood on stands in the middle of the floor, half its planks stripped, smelling of cedar and varnish.
A kitchen stood at one end, a bed behind a sliding screen at the other, and between them a worktable covered in clamps.
"The spare room's through there," Mitchell said, and nodded toward a door I had missed. "It's small. It has a lock."
I walked in and looked at a narrow bed, a dresser and a window onto the water.
"It's perfect."
"It's a storage room with a mattress."
"It has a lock," I said.
I came back out and stood in front of him with my arms crossed over the strangest feeling I had ever had, which was safety.
"I have rules."
"Go ahead."
"I stay in that room. The lock is on my side. You don't come through that door, you don't knock at night, and you don't touch me."
He looked at me for a long moment.
"For how long?"
"Until Lawrence says out loud, in front of other people, what he did to us."
"That could be never."
"Then never." I lifted my chin. "Those are my terms, Ashcroft."
Something moved at the corner of his mouth, and it wasn't a smile.
"All right, Hastings," he said. "Your rules."
He made dinner badly.
I sat on a stool and watched him scorch a pan of eggs, and I did not notice his sleeves were pushed to his elbows, or the long muscle in his forearm when he flipped them.
