Chapter 18: The Drugged Mash
The Lower Kennels were quiet in a way Zhiyi hated.
Every pen she passed held a beast lying on its side, breathing slowly, with its tongue out.
The grey wolf cub lay in the straw with its legs straight.
The crane with the bent wing had folded up.
Behind her, Lei Juehan said nothing, and the air around him felt like the edge of a blade.
"They breathe," said Mu. "I held a mirror to every one. They breathe, and they do not hear me."
Zhiyi went to the Hall's mash sacks stacked by the feed shed.
Each sack was stamped with the Hundred Herbs Hall's plum-blossom seal.
She opened the newest one, took a pinch of the grain, and put it on her tongue.
It was sweet.
It was sweet and warm, and a moment later her tongue stopped feeling.
She spat it out and wiped her mouth hard.
"Silent orchid," she said. "A lot of it."
"The same herb as the pill," said Juehan.
"The same herb, ground into every sack. It doesn't kill them. It dulls them. They'll sleep through the day and wake up not hearing anyone."
