Chapter 18: Live With Corbin
Corbin accepted the invitation within the hour.
The network had asked Tegan to do a family segment on Trail Talk, and she had said yes on one condition: her brother sits in the second armchair.
He arrived in a navy suit with a smile ready, and he shook the host's hand twice.
"I think families should work things out where people can see," Corbin said, settling in. "It's the only honest way."
"I agree," Tegan said.
She sat across from him on the fake porch, in a plain white shirt, with her hands in her lap.
Cal stood in the shadows by the camera cable with a tablet under his arm.
The red light came on.
"Tonight," the host said, "a reunion. Tegan Stegman and her brother Corbin, who is also her manager, or was. Corbin, the internet has questions."
"Of course it does." Corbin leaned forward, warm and rueful. "We've made mistakes. I've made mistakes. Tegan is the strongest person I know, and the family only ever wanted her safe."
"Safe," Tegan repeated.
"Safe and supported."
"Corbin, what was the email you sent to every agency in Los Angeles?"
"A misunderstanding."
"You said that on the phone." She nodded to the producer. "Roll it, please."
On the big screen behind them, Corbin's voice said the word misunderstanding.
The audience hummed.
"That was a private call," Corbin said. "Taken out of context."
"Then here is the context."
The screen changed.
It showed the garage studio under the ring light, with the folio on the table, and Corbin in his charcoal suit.
