Chapter 8: Since Spring

Wanning looked at the colonel's wife, and then at the captain.

He had stood up.

He stood very straight, with his hands at his sides, and his face had no expression at all.

"Madam," he said. "Thank you for the oranges."

"Don't thank me, thank the boys, they're the ones who never stop talking about you." She squeezed Wanning's hands. "He told the whole table in March. Half a year, and not one photograph! I had to find yours in a magazine."

She dug a folded page from her bag and held it up.

It was a clipping from an interview, with a small picture of Wanning at a screenwriters' prize dinner two years ago, wearing the only good dress she owned.

"I had it framed," the colonel's wife said happily. "In my sitting room. I told the colonel, that is a girl who will keep him in line."

Wanning opened her mouth and found nothing in it.

Luo, behind the woman, winced and began to steer her gently toward the door.

"Madam, the car is waiting, and the colonel is waiting, and these are very good oranges..."

When the kitchen was empty, the captain sat down again heavily.

"I can explain," he said.

"Then do," Wanning said.

He looked at the counter.

"In March the colonel arranged a dinner. His niece was there. In April a cousin of the commissar. In May a doctor from the general hospital. I said no each time, and he arranged another."

"So you said you were engaged."
