Si-woo's mother's laundry smelled of hot cotton and lemon soap, the way it had every day of his life.
She stood behind the counter with an iron in her hand and her reading glasses pushed up into her hair.
She watched the two of them come through the door, a small man and a very large one.
She set the iron down on its end.
"That's him," she said.
"Mom."
"The one on the television. The big one. Who knelt." She narrowed her eyes. "Did you kneel to my son in front of the government?"
Ji-seok went red up to the scar in his eyebrow.
"Yes, ma'am," he said.
"Why?"
"Because he told me to."
"Hm," said Si-woo's mother.
She came around the counter, all five feet of her, and looked up at Ji-seok for a long time.
Then she looked at the box in his hands.
He had brought a gift basket.
It was the size of a small child, with a pineapple in it.
"Ma'am, I didn't know what you liked."
"I don't like pineapple." She took the basket anyway and set it on the sorting table. "Can you fold a sheet?"
"I..."
"It's a yes or a no."
"I can learn."
"Take that end."
