Chapter 20: The Salon Door
I called him back with my hands shaking so hard I dialed Bernie twice.
"Is anybody there?" I said. "At the warehouse. Is anybody hurt?"
"Nobody's there. Nobody's been there since August. They're carrying out empty pallets on the news."
"So it worked."
"It worked."
I sat up in Bernie's bed in the dark.
Port Richmond.
Not the pier, not the garage, not the bakery.
Port Richmond.
"Luciano."
"I know."
"It's him."
"I know, Bee."
His voice was flat and very quiet.
His father's brother.
The man who'd danced at our wedding and called me sweetheart and quoted Proverbs over my kitchen sink.
"Are you all right?" I said.
He didn't answer for a long time.
"Ask me tomorrow," he said, and hung up.
Bernie made coffee at five.
Rosalba was banging on the salon door at six, in scrubs, with a bag of hot rolls and her glasses on crooked.
"Nonna heard from Zia," she said. "Zia heard it from him. He's calling an emergency table."
"When?"
"One o'clock. Today."
"For what?"
Rosalba put the rolls down very carefully on the counter.
