Chapter 15: The Kitchen Table

The pot roast sat in the middle of the Winslows' kitchen table, and nobody had touched it.

Frank had set three places.

He had put Eli and Gabe on the same side, with their elbows an inch apart, and then sat across from them with his hands folded.

It was the first time in his life Eli had seen his father not talk for a full minute.

"Say it, Dad," Eli said.

"I'm working up to it."

"You've had since Saturday."

"I had a speech," Frank said. "I rehearsed it in the truck. Then you walked in and I forgot all of it."

He looked at the roast, and then at his son.

"I put you on that list on purpose. I decided something about your life without asking you, and I'm sorry."

Eli had expected to feel better hearing it.

He felt the anger come up again, hot and clean, and he was glad of it.

"You put me on a table," he said.

"I did."

"In front of a dozen people. In a paper gown."

"I thought it would be a small room."

"Dad."

"I know."

"Somebody had a camera. The whole hospital saw me. And you sat out here with your beer and your bird feeder and waited to see what would happen."

Frank's jaw worked under the beard.

"Yes," he said. "That's about right."

Gabe had said nothing.

He sat with his big hands flat on the tablecloth and his eyes on his plate.

"You too," Eli said, turning. "You both knew something I didn't, for two years. You picked me out of a lineup. I wasn't a person in this. I was a project."
