Chapter 18: The Offer

Kessling came to the archive on Thursday morning in a pressed gray suit and a pair of paper shoe covers.

The director had made him wear them in the stacks.

Eli met him at the end of aisle six, between a cart of boxed city directories and a bank of gray shelving.

"Mr. Winslow," Kessling said warmly. "What a lovely place to work."

"It's a basement."

"It's a basement with a very generous donor." Kessling tapped the shelf with one finger. "My foundation funds the digitization project here. Did you know that?"

Eli had not known that.

He kept his face still.

"Your director is a fine woman," Kessling said. "She's worried about her renewal. I told her I would speak to you first, as a courtesy."

"To me."

"To you."

He drew a folded paper out of his jacket and held it out.

It was a job offer, printed on cream stock.

Staff archivist, full time, with benefits and a salary that was almost double what Eli made now.

Eli looked at the number for a long moment.

He had been broke for so long that his body reacted before his mind did, and he hated that it did.

"Congratulations," Kessling said. "Starting the first of next month."

"And the rest of it?"

"A short statement." Kessling produced a second page. "It says you were pressured by Dr. Kelleher into the session, and that you went along out of a long habit of deferring to him. You're a young man. People will understand."

"I'm twenty-four."

"Of course."

"And what do I get if I don't sign?"

Kessling gave him the pleasant look he used on residents.
