Chapter 13: Nothing Hidden
By nine that night, I had told him I wanted the lamp on.
"All the way on?" Reeve asked.
"All the way. And the curtains open."
We stood at the foot of his bed in the upstairs room with the window dark behind us.
Mount Shavano was a black shape against the stars, and the porch camera pointed at nothing but the yard.
I had spent seven weeks undressing him in the dark so nobody would see.
Nobody was left to hide from.
"Take your shirt off," I said.
He pulled it over his head and dropped it.
The new mark on his collarbone had gone purple, and the old one on his shoulder was a faint pink crescent.
I put my thumb on each one.
"Mine," I said.
"Yours," he said, and his stomach tightened under my hand.
"Now me."
He undid the buttons of my flannel one at a time and looked at everything he uncovered.
He had all night, and he took it.
He pushed the shirt off my shoulders and kissed the freckles there.
He kissed my collarbone and the place on my neck where I wore his mark.
