Chapter 16: Sound Carries

Page's POV

The hut sat at the top of a three-hour skin up the valley, and I had hated every minute of the last hour.

Reeve had broken trail the whole way with my second pack on his chest.

At dusk we reached a long log cabin with a stovepipe and a wall of boots in the entry.

Twelve people sat eating pasta at one table.

Two groups of backcountry skiers had beaten us there.

One was a pair of couples in their forties.

One was a row of five college friends in matching wool hats, passing around a bottle.

The hut host, a gray-braided woman with a ladle, pointed upstairs.

"One loft, one bunk room, fourteen mattresses," she said. "You two are on the end by the window."

"Thank you," I said.

"Sleeping bags zip together, if you brought the right ones." She looked at Reeve's pack and then at me. "You brought the right ones."

I blushed to my hair.

Reeve, behind me, said, "Yes, ma'am," in the calmest voice I had ever heard.

By nine o'clock the bunk room held eleven sleepers.

The roof beams ticked with cold, and someone at the far end snored in long slow rasps.

We lay on the end mattress by the window, in two bags zipped into one, in our base layers and wool socks.
