Chapter 24: The Room Upstairs
He drove.
I made him put the heat on high, and he did it without arguing, which told me how cold he really was.
Neither of us said much on the way down Butler Street.
He kept my hand on the bench seat between us, and he drove with the other one.
The Bluebird was dark.
Gretchen had locked up and left the light on over the grill, the way I'd taught her.
There was a note on the order spike in her handwriting.
"Joanne's at mine. Pie's in the walk-in. Don't do anything I wouldn't do, which is nothing."
Magnus read it over my shoulder.
"I like her more every day."
"She threatened to put your hand on the flat-top."
"That's why."
I poured the cold coffee down the sink and made a fresh pot.
Black, two sugars.
I set it on the counter in front of the cracked stool.
He sat down and looked at it for a long time before he drank.
"He'd say it was too weak," he said.
"He'd say everything was too weak."
I took his hand again and led him to the back stairs.
They were narrow and steep, and they creaked on the third step and the ninth.
He knew it.
He stepped over the ninth without looking.
At the top I opened the door and turned on the lamp.
The room looked smaller with him in it.
The slanted ceiling came down so low on one side he had to duck.
My mattress on the floor with the blue quilt from Gretchen's closet.
The two yellow walls and the two I hadn't gotten to.
The green duffel for a nightstand, and my dad's spatula on top of it.
The radiator knocked twice.
Magnus stood just inside the door with his head bent under the beam.
He looked at the window over the street.
"It still sticks," he said.
"The window?"
"You have to lift on the left side." He touched the sill like he was greeting it. "I used to sit in this window at three in the morning and watch the bakery trucks."
