Chapter 27: The Lot
The woman with the badge didn't come for Randall that night.
She came for Landry.
She walked up the side steps of the stage while the room was still on its feet, and she held out her hand.
"Mr. Moxley. You said Monday. We'd rather have the phone tonight."
Landry looked at her hand.
Then he gave her his phone, and his shoulders came down.
Randall watched it go into an evidence bag.
He didn't say a word.
He picked up his overcoat from the back of his chair and walked out the side door, alone, past the kitchen.
On Sunday night my cousin called me.
I almost didn't pick up.
"I went in this afternoon," he said. His voice was hoarse. "To the police. I told them about the brick. I told them I drove."
"Why?"
"Because he looked at me last night like he was going to hand me to them first." He breathed out. "They're coming to the lot in the morning. Nine o'clock. I thought you should be there."
He hung up before I could thank him.
Monday morning was cold and bright.
Gretchen and Joanne opened the Bluebird without me.
