Pack Law Made Him My Brother, So I Made Him My Mate novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: San Juan
On the morning of San Juan the Mora River ran fast and cold and gold with the first sun.
The whole pack stood on the bank in the old way, barefoot, with their pants rolled and their sleeves pushed up.
Amador stood at the water's edge in his good white shirt, with his hat in his hands.
My mother stood across from him in the blue dress.
For six months he had sat on the step of my aunt's trailer every night.
For six months she had left the porch light on.
Between them, on a flat river stone, lay a bundle of fresh cedar and a single match.
Doña Cirila held her cane in both hands.
"Rocio Quintana," she said. "Do you light a new fire?"
"I do."
"Amador Montoya, do you sit at it?"
"I do," he said, and his voice cracked.
My mother struck the match.
The cedar caught with a crack, and smoke rose straight up into the light.
The pack let out a long soft breath.
Cruz's hand found mine.
On his throat and forearm the scars of my teeth had healed to white crescents, and the ones on my neck matched.
"Come on," he said in my ear. "I want to show you something."
The house stood at the end of the grant road, a mile from his father's.
Cruz had built it himself with six cousins who were allowed to speak to him again, one bale of adobe at a time.
It had a long portal, a tin roof, a stove, and a bed with his grandfather's carved headboard.
In the yard stood a horno that had never been lit.
I walked through the door barefoot, with river water still drying on my ankles.
He shut it and leaned on it.
