Chapter 8: The Last Night

At noon her phone rang, and she let it ring.

I took the pen out of her hand and put it in the sink.

"You are not signing," I said.

"You'll be gone."

"Then I'll be gone with your father's company still yours."

"That isn't your decision."

"It is tonight."

She hit my chest with the flat of her hand, and then she hit it again, and then she held on to my shirt and cried until it was soaked.

Travis called half a dozen more times.

At six, Susie came back before her shift, saw us on the kitchen floor with our backs against the cabinets, and said nothing at all.

She kissed the top of Audrey's head, and she kissed mine, and she left.

By eleven the house was dark except for the lamp in our bedroom.

*Hours remaining: one.*

Audrey stood in the middle of the room with her hands at her sides.

"I've cancelled the eight thousand," she said. "Look."

She held out her phone.

The scheduled transfer was gone from the list.

"Good."

"If you disappear and I did nothing..."

"You did everything." I crossed the room. "You did more than anyone has ever done for me."

"I want one more thing."

"Anything."

"I want you to stop being careful."

Her voice shook, and her eyes did not.

"I've been careful for three years. I want tonight to be the only time I'm not."

I put my hands on either side of her face.

"Audrey. If this is goodbye..."

"Then don't say it like that."

"I don't want you to feel like I took..."

"You took nothing," she said. "I'm taking."

She pushed the shirt from my shoulders.

Her hands were quick and sure, and they shook only a little.

I kissed her, slow at first, and then not slow at all.

She backed me toward the bed, and I let her.

When the back of my knees hit the mattress, she kept going, and I sat down hard, and she climbed into my lap.

Her mouth was hot against my throat.

I pulled the T-shirt over her head, and then there was only her skin under my hands, warm and smooth, and the soft heavy weight of her breasts against my chest.
